I was in the library at Montrose recently and in the entrance hall they have a Roll of Honour Book in a glass case (similar to Brechin).
It was opened on a page containing WW2 casualties and had name, rank, regt., date of death etc. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera but probably in the fullness of time both this and the Breching rolls should be photographed. Would also be interesting to compare the names to the memorial etc. |

(Glasgow Herald 12th Feb 1915)
"Private David Fawns, C company 5th Black Watch, Montrose, has died of wounds at the front. Yesterday his mother, Mrs Webster, 11 Castle Street, Montrose, learned of her sons death through two letters she received, one from Captain E.L. Watson, commanding 5th Black Watch, and the other from Chaplain George Thomson. Fawns, who was only 17 years of age, was shot through the lung and died in the 24th hospital. The Chaplain enclosed a letter which he wrote to the dying soldiers dictation. The letter says "Dear mother, I only want to tell you I am badly hit in the chest. I am ready to die. All my love, Dave." The late soldier was a mill worker in Chapel Works and had been two years in the territorials."

CASUALTIES AMONG MONTROSE SOLDIERS.
Private David Moig, 2d Gordon Highlanders, whose widow and four young children reside in Reform Street, Montrose, is officially reported killed.
Enlisting a year ago, he had been at the front for five months. He was about twenty-eight years of age, and prior to joining the army worked as a miner at Dalkeith.
Official news is to hand stating that Private James Paton, 2d Black Watch, son of Mrs Paton, 92 Castle Street, Montrose, had died of wounds received on January 7 at the Persian Gulf. Private Paton had been nine years in the army, eight of which were spent in India. He was twenty-seven years of age, and spent a brief furlough at home before leaving for the Persian Gulf.
Missing since November, 1914, Corporal Andrew Burton, whose mother resides in Capper's Wynd, Montrose, is officially reported killed.
He was nine years in the 1st Black Watch, eight of which he spent in India, and on the outbreak of war was called up as a reservist. He was in business in Dumbarton, where his widow resides. He was twenty-nine years of age.
The authorities at Perth have advised Mrs Paton, 12 Capper's Wynd, Montrose, that her son, Corporal R. Dempster, 2d Black Watch, was wounded at the Persian Gulf on 7th January.
Information has been received by Mr Alexander Cuthbert, shoemaker, Montrose, that his son, Private Harry Cuthbert, 1st Seaforth Highlanders, was wounded at the Persian Gulf on 7th January. Private Cuthbert, who is one of five brothers who joined on the outbreak of war, received his transfer from the Scots Greys.

Does anyone have the info who or when the Montrose war memorial was unveiled initially ? ( I see to recall that it was unveiled by Major R C Hoyer- Millar who had served in the Boer War and then in WW1 10 Black Watch in France and Salonika ) .

Thanks for that info from the newspapers . I see that there are two Hoyer -Millar listed in the Black Watch officers list :
MILLAR, R. H- . , V.D., (V & TF) 2nd Angus Bn Capt 22/8/1891 , served in South Africa with 2nd Bn , Hon Major ; 5th Angus & Dundee Bn; Major 14/5/1915, T/Lt Col Commanding 5th Angus & Dundee Bn 2/11/1915 ; to UK 24/2/1916
This Hoyer - Millar is the one who unveiled the Montrose War Memorial it would seem
The one who I knew of through my name sake Uncle serving in the 10th Black Watch in France & Salonika was :
Millar , R.C. H- , (V & R) , 2nd Angus Bn; 2nd Lieut 13/2/1892, Lieut 17/2/1894 : to 3rd Bn ; to 10th Bn Lieutenant 7/10/1914, Capt 9/10/1915 . The Hoyer- Millar family owned Rossie Castle
