Buckie - Moray District
The Buckie war memorial takes the form of a tall freestone pedestal of classical design with pillastered corners and cornice set on two low steps. The pedestal is surmounted with the bronze figurative group of a soldier and sailor by Birnie Rhind. The commemorations and names of the dead are listed on bronze tablets set into the faces of the pedestal.
The monument stands in Cluny Square, North West Quadrant.
Birnie Rhind was one of Scotlands great Victorian sculptors and was responsible for many Regimental memorials around Scotland. The heroic gesture of the Buckie memorial is very reminiscent of his many Boer War monuments. Many of the war memorials erected after the Great War featured sculptures of infantrymen but objections were occassionaly raised at the time as these monuments were intended to commemorate the men and women of all services who were killed. In at least three coastal towns, at Kinghorn in Fife, at Largs, and here at Buckie, the objections were overcome by commissioning a figurative group featuring a soldier and sailor.
Below is a photo of one of my old postcards from my collection.

Jim's postcard shows the Buckie memorial in it's original location at the centre of the road crossing in Cluny Square.
Although located in the town of Buckie it serves as a memorial for the Parish of Rathven, which includes Buckie,
It was subsequently moved to it's present location (1970's??) due to increased traffic and concerns that it might be damaged.
Update Jan 2008
This shows the memorial and it's original site where the mini roundabout is now
