DerekR - he was born in Langholm, following his father & grandfather before him who were also stonemasons!
He was one of 15 (yes - 15! ) siblings - the last child, Charlotte, was born shortly after her father died. At some point soon after that her mother, Janet (Davidson) Beattie, moved to Hawick along with the remaining children who were still living at home. I don't know if she was returning to her own roots or if some of her older children had settled there previously.

Having seen the amazing pictures earlier on this thread - I now want to try and visit/photo all the Beattie War Memorials.
Is there a list of them anywhere?
