That's a cracking memorial.
Any idea of the sculptor? _________________

Text is 'borrowed' from the Roll-of-honour website, I am sure they won't mind, they do use my picture.
The Kirkcudbright memorial is in the form of a bronze figure on a stone base and stands outside MacLellans castle, Kirkcudbright. The figure is a seated warrior with sword and shield protecting a sleeping child, the base if of rugged stones all standing on a cairn. There are 88 names for World War 1 by surname, rank, regiment, forename and decoration, for World War 2 there are 36 names by surname, rank, regiment, forename. The memorial was unveiled on 14th April 1921 by Colonel R. F. Dudgeon. The designer was Mr George Henry Paulin.

An old photograph, taken shortly after the unveiling ceremony. No WW2 plaque obviously, and it looks like the stane work has been rebuilt a little. _________________ www.sonsofgalloway.org.uk

This memorial was cat C(S) listed on 28 May 1981.
The listing included the following description:
"George Henry Paulin, circa 1920. Rick base with rock-faced plinth and block moulded at top to resemble chair, thistle decoration at angles. Figure of warrior and child."
The listing also mentioned an article in Country Life 27 August 1957.

According to The Scotsman of the time the main figure represents Britain
From ‘The Scotsman’ of Saturday, 16th April 1921, page 7
Kirkcudbright war memorials
The memorial erected to the memory of the soldiers and sailors belonging to Kirkcudbright town and parish was unveiled at Kirkcudbright on Thursday by Colonel R.F. Dudgeon, C.B. Lord-Lieutenant of the Stewartry.
The memorial is the work of Mr G.H. Paulin, sculptor, Glasgow, and consists of a group of bronze statuary depicting Britain defending the weak. Prior to the unveiling ceremony a united memorial service was held in St Cuthbert’s Parish Church, A memorial was also unveiled in St Cuthbert's R.C. Church being performed by the Rev. Father M'Hardy, M.C. The memorial takes the form of a Pisa marble font. The pupils of the Johnston School have also erected a scroll memorial to former pupils.
We have a memorial from St Cuthbert's Parish Church on the forum but I couldn't find St Cuthbert's Roman Catholic Church, which unveiled its memorial on the same day, on the forum.
Johnston School is mentioned too. We have Kirkudbright Academy's memorial but not Johnston School which is the primary school.

I knew of the Johnston School memorial - will have to get my skates on, the school is due to close at the end of the year. Both memorials now added to the main index. |

This is the sketch model of the memorial mentioned in the article above. It is in Broughton House, a Scottish National Trust property in Kirkcudbright. Note the different arrangement of the name panels than that in the actual memorial.

Good find Paul. The angle of the sword, the face and the figure representing 'the weak' all seem to have changed slightly from this figure too.
We've got more about Paulin on the forum here:

On looking at the actual memorial yesterday, I noticed for the first time that there is a row of thistles carved into the stone on the base along the front left corner as you face the statue. It doesn't come out well on the photos but you can make it out on the first photo on the thread once you look for it. It just makes it something other than a plain stone base.

The Kirkcudbright memorial is one of the memorials featured in Derek Boorman's book ' A century of Remembrance - One hundred outstanding British War Memorials.'
