Thornhill is in the Parish of Morton, in the early years a village was called Morton as well. But Thornhill has always been in Parish of Morton.

Hello
I took a photo recently of Nethermill Memorial and noted the names of the fallen in WW2 if that is any use to you. I have just written a book called "World War Two - Annandale Connections" which has an appendix containing several photos and lists of names from WW2 memorials in the district. |

This isn't just our research, as a forum member it's as much yours as ours now. This forum has been set up for anyone to add their information about Scotland's war memorials, we're doing this to share it with as many people as possible.
Kind regards

Wasn't sure where to put this but I thought perhaps someone would like to see it. Collage entitled 'Remembrance in the Glenkens'.

Memorials are still turning up, places have yet to be visited but I thought it worth noting progress so far.
UKNIWM records 298 memorials in Dumfries and Galloway.
We have listed 456 (of which 23 have yet to be photographed) plus a further 27 covenanter memorials.
Looking another way, 460 photographed, 23 yet to go and others still to be identified as I check the remaining churches, all village halls and all schools.

Carronbridge is a small village midway between Thornhill and Sanquhar and also close to Durisdeer and Mennock. Although you would expect a memorial, there is none to be seen and the locals commemorate their remembrance service at other locations. As far as I have been able to tell, there has never been a church although there is a village hall (not been able to obtain access as yet).
A search using Geoff's search engines shows no entries for Carronbridge on CWGC for WW2 or on SNWM. For CWGC WW1 there are 11 names listed, 10 of these are listed on the memorials for Sanquhar, Thornhill or Durisdeer. The only one not found on any memorial in Dumfries and Galloway is George Parker died 12 Apr 1918. He was born in Nantwich but does not appear on the Nantwich memorial.
Given the above, I conclude that there never was a memorial for Carronbridge.

On the A76 travelling from Sanquhar you enter the Parish of Durisdeer just before Enterkinfoot; when you enter the village of Carronbridge and go down hill to the wee bridge you leave Durisdeer Parish and enter the Parish of Morton as you go up the hill; boundary in middle bridge.
To west of Carronbridge boundary onto Penpont. Many of the men from Carronbridge as recorded on either - Penpont; Morton; and the two WM's for the Parish of Durisdeer.
For the parish of Durisdeer are 2 WM's first one unveiled 30/10/1921 in middle of Parish which is 2 miles from village of Carronbridge; and second one at Durisdeer church, unveiled on 13/11/1921 - we have for WW1 28 men found on both and 5 more on the second making in total 33 from Parish of Durisdeer. For WW2 we have 7people 6 men and l lady both WM's have the same people.
This wee village of Carronbridge had a school, shops and garage.
You can read full information on WM's in 'Durisdeer War Memorials and Parish Memories' Compiled by Gladys Cuttle written November 2010, priced at £10.00 per copy extra £2.00 Postage. Also 'Letters of a Durisdeer Soldier, James Hendrie with Additions' by Gladys written in November 2010 priced at £15.00 per copy plus extra £2.00 for postage. Send details on PM to Teddy.
Regards, Teddy. |

Thought that some might be interested in a stats update for Dumfries and Galloway. So far we have posted a total of 514 memorials plus a further 30 covenanter memorials. The breakdown of 514 is (civic - 134, church - 159, school - 24, individual - 143, regimental - 11, other - 43). I have identified a further 17 which we do not yet have and still have a few places to look, mainly churches, schools and village halls.
UKNIWM recorded only 298 memorials when we started this and we now know the total to be at least 531 so it looks like UKNIWM records have approximately half of the memorials listed if this is typical.

The Covenanter memorial to John Hunter is to be found by the "Devil's Beef Tub" just north of Moffat.

On the BBC Scotland news yesterday evening there was mention of a new memorial being erected at the Mull of Galloway. Can't see anything posted on the website yet.
Update: further investigation shows that the new Mull of Galloway Trust want to erect a memorial to commemorate the cras of a Beaufighter which crashed in June 1944 while in transit from Weston super Mare to Lossiemouth when it crashed in thick fog. Casualties were:
Name: STANIFORD, ROYSTON EDWARD
Initials: RE
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Senior Flight Engineer
Regiment/Service: Air Transport Auxilliary
Date of Death: 8 June 1944
Grave reference: Column 3
Cemetery: Glasgow Crematorium
Name: ECHALLIER, CLAUDIUS
Initials: C
Nationality: French
Rank: First Officer
Regiment/Service: Air Transport Auxilliary
Date of Death: 8 June 1944
Grave Reference: 29. D. 16
Cemetery: Brookwood Military Cemetery
Apparently Echallier was one of only 5 French nationals serving with the Air Transport Auxilliary. |

Just seen an item in the Dumfries and Galloway Standard (6th March) that Dumfries Academy pupils are involved with the creation of a new memorial to Jane Haining which is expected to be completed in the summer and will be placed inside the school. |

just updated the D&G index and noticed that I have just posted my 500th memorial in D&G and we have 566 in total.
I know of a few more which we have still to get and will add these to the index plus we need some photos so I will try and get together a list of memorials to be visited and photographed.
