This memorial was to the 15th HLI, the "Glasgow Tramways" battalion. It's rather fitting, therefore, that it is now situated in Glasgow Transport Museum.
It is however, somewhat "stuck at the back" on a wall, behind a tram. Hopefully when the museum moves to new premises in the next few years a more prominent location can be found for this plaque.

Went back last week and got some better pictures. And some closeups of the names. It's not in a great position for taking pictures, so apologies if any of these are unclear.

Quick update on this one. The Transport Museum will be moving to new premises in the next few years, and they've obviously started work on this. Some exhibits have been removed for various reasons connected with the move. The memorial is one of them, although a notice states it will be back on display by the 5th November (perhaps for a wreath laying on the 11th?)
The result of this is that it is currently sitting on its side in a "back room", as you can see here:

I'm afraid it's still in the back room but it's now upright and does not have a load of clutter in front of it.
I'll contact Glasgow Museums (they are part of the Sports and Culture Dept.) to see what the plans are for the memorial once the new Riverside Museum is open.

I have today received an email from JOHN MESSNER, CURATOR , Transport & Technology , MUSEUM OF TRANSPORT. 1 Bunhouse Road, Glasgow G3 8DP
saying that the 15th Bn Highland Light Infantry war memorial is currently OFF DISPLAY. It has been undergoing a thorough clean in order for it to be ready to move to our new site. The new musuem will be opening in SPRING 2011 at which time the memorial will be back on display.
Mr John Messner mentions that " Leitch , John D " is listed on the memorial as there was an enquiry on this Scottish War memorials project website about this Arbroath resident being a casualty on this HLI memorial .

I received an interesting email from Rosemary Watt, Senior Curator , ( Industry & Design) Glasgow Museums , Museum of Transport ...
As you may know by now , the Museum of Transport closed to the public on 18April in preparation for our move to the new Riverside Museum due to open in Spring 2011.
The Memorial will be shown in the new museum , and will be the main focus of a display which talks about the men involved in the "Tramway Battalion ", the story of their recruitment and the fate of so many of them - as evidenced by the memorial . The story will focus on one family who have been able to give us a full history , and will feature the letter's from the father - a soldier in the Battalion - to his three young children.
Over the years , relatives of a number of the men named on the memorial have contacted us. We are always interested to hear from families and should be delighted if your friend were to contact us, if he felt able to give us any information about his grandfather
Thank you for contacting the Museum of Transport .

( I see that our colleague who made the inquiry from USA has not come back to the website so this can not be read by him but others out there may have ancestors who were in the 15th HLI in WW1 and could supply the Museum with info )

Wilson, James, second column, seventh down, is my Great Grandad on my Mothers side.
I recall, my brother pointing up at the list of names when I could only have been 10 or 11. The memorial was at the old tram depot at that time.
My wife is currently researching our family tree, in pretty much every direction it goes It was only recently that we managed to find out where James Wilson's grave is. It is one of 135 graves in the communal cemetary in Nesle France, along with another 27 other HLI soldiers.
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=307680
http://www.ww1cemeteries.com/ww1frenchcemeteries/neslecommunal.htm
Our research is still at the begining. However, we are finding it difficult to narrrow down to the last battle James fought in. From the information we can easily find, between April and June 1917, Nesle was No 21 casualty clearance station and the dead from it were buried there. However, the registered date of death of James is 29th April 1917, but Nesle was apparently under German occupation between 25th March and 28th August 1917. This information is somewhat conflicting The date of death coincides with the dates of the CCS period at Nesle, but was Nesle really under German occupation at that time, and which battle would James have succumbed to his injuries from.
If any one can help point us in the right direction, we would be greatful, and I hope some of the above nformation may be of help to some one else. |

Re L/cpl 13203 J Wilson , 15th HLI he is listed on the Scottish National War Memorial , HLI roll of honour at the Edinburgh Castle with this extra info :
Born Glasgow
Theatre of War France and Flanders
Regarding the check on the Soldiers died in the Great War : HLI:
the additional info is that he is recorded as being born and enlisted in GLASGOW and died of wounds on 29 April 1917
I see there is a book called An epic of Glasgow : history of the 15th Bn HLI (city of glasgow reg) compiled by Thomas Chalmers , john Mccallum & Co 1934

Thanks for the info, but digging a little deeper, i eventualy found that other info also.
I managed to resolve the conflicting information about No21 CCS at Nesle. It was not until the folowing year that the Germans re occupied Nesle in March 1918, and not 1917. The CWGC Doesn't read like that though So far I could only find information relating to this on the French Wikipedia for 'Nesle'.
After speaking to my Mum this evening, I now know where the memorial plaque and two of the three medals James was awarded are. I will also be able to get a copy of a picture of James, one of three in the picture, others unknown. I also downloaded the medal index card from Ancestry.co.uk.
My brother visited the grave in Nesle last year and has some photos of this too.
Its coming together, but it would be very interesting to find out which part of the front line where he suffered his injuries. My Mums memories of the story is that he was injured by shrapnel in the trenches, had a leg amputated and then died from gangreen, but this is un substantiated.
Oh and tracking down 'An Epic Of Glasgow' is proving dificult
If this is in the wrong place, I do appologise.

I'm afraid it's not in a much better position at the Riverside.
It sits beside a tram from the period and a small information board about the background to the Tramways Battalion. The (temporary) lighting today made photography impossible. |

Good to know that it's on display at least. I had feared it wouldn't be. |
