WMR 79647.
The Perthshire Advertiser of 30 January 1918 reports-
In Memoriam.
LATE LIEUT. W. A. RAE, MURTHLY.
The Directors of the County and City Perth Royal Infirmary have received a donation of £500 from Mr W. A. Rae, factor, Doaiglasfield, Murthly, in memory of his son, Second Lieutenant William Alexander Rae, Black Watch, to whose memory a brass memorial tablet has been: placed in one the surgical wards of the Infirmary.
Lieut. Rae was educated at Perth Academy, and at the date of enlistment acted as assistant to his father in the management of the Murthly estates. While keen in business, he was a popular and enthusiastic sportsman. Early in 1916 he enlisted in the Scottish Horse, was trained at Dunkeld and 0.T.C., Oxford, receiving his commission in the Black Watch 1st March, 1917. He had only been a few weeks at the front when he was killed in action In Flanders on the 31st July, his first fight. His Captain wrote:- “He was with us for only a short time, and was more unfortunate than most in receiving his baptism of fire in a big attack. The cheerful way in which he accepted this unusual situation gained our respect and admiration. His geniality in mess was most noticeable. With his decease we lose at once a trusted colleague and a firm friend.”
It is not currently known if this memorial survives |
