The monument to the Women's Timber Corps 'LUMBERJILLS' stands just a few hundred yards from the front entrance to the David Marshall Lodge, Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, Aberfoyle.
The monument is a low cairn type plinth with a life size bronze statue of a LumberJill by sculptor Malcolm Robertson. A small memorial plaque is fixed to a rock nearby.
The sculptor's signature
There's an unusual texture to the bronze with lines sweeping outwards from focal points and around the contours of the body. I think this seems to recall the grain of wood or the rough texture of tree bark which seems appropriate and I have a feeling the original work may actually have been carved in wood with a copy then made for casting in bronze? It is very attractive and effective.
