Scottish Opera, 39 Elmbank Crescent, Glasgow G2 4PT
OS Grid Ref: NS 581657
This building was originally built in 1907 as the new home of the prestigious Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland. Following a competition, local architect John Bennie Wilson (1849 – 1923) was selected to design the new building. His design adopted a self-consciously Beaux Arts style; very rich, lavish and heavily ornamented.
The memorial to the engineers who died aboard the ill-fated Titanic is located in the main entrance hall.
Of those listed on the memorial, William Mackie and William Kelly were Glaswegians.
Kelly, an assistant electrical engineer, had only sailed on the voyage to complete work left unfinished during the ship’s fitting out.
