Named on the Ettrick Parish War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:
GUNNER J. BRUNTON THOMSON ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY.
James Brunton Thomson – age 26 – Gunner (125588) 103rd Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
James was a farmer and shepherd at Ramseycleuch, Ettrick when he enlisted in December 1915. He joined the 23rd Division Ammunition Column in France in June 1916 and was wounded in August 1917. He joined the 103rd Brigade, RFA in October 1917 and moved to Mantua and Marcaria in Italy in November where the 23rd Division took over the front line at the Montello in December. After being in action on the Asiago Plateau in June 1918, James became ill and in September he was evacuated to hospital in England where he was diagnosed with spinal caries tuberculosis. He was discharged from the army in December 1918 and awarded a Silver War Badge (B71150) James died of his illness in the Ralston Auxiliary Hospital near Paisley, Renfrewshire.

Born 1893 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire. Son of William and Elizabeth (Brunton) Thomson of Ramseycleuch, Ettrick.
Died on 29 November 1919 and buried in Ettrick Parish Churchyard.
