From a document in the church
..
Lieutenant Donald Mackintosh, late Seaforth Highlanders.
For the most conspicuous bravery and resolution in the face of intense machine gun fire. During the initial advance he was shot through the right leg but, though crippled, he continued to lead his men and captured the trench.
In the captured trench Lieutenant Mackintosh collected men from another company, who had lost their leader, and drove back a counter attack. He was again wounded and, although unable to stand, he continued nevertheless, to control the situation. With only fifteen men left he ordered his party to be ready to advance to the final objective and, with great difficulty, got out of the trench and encouraged his men to advance. He was again wounded and fell.
The gallantry and devotion to duty of this officer were beyond all praise.
Lieutenant Mackintosh was killed in action on 11th April, 1917 while serving with the 3rd Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, the Duke of Albanys). |

The Clan Murray (4,835 tons) on the 29th was about thirty‑five miles from the south‑east coast of Ireland, when she was torpedoed amidships and sank within five minutes. The whole of the crew of seventy‑eight were in the water, with nothing but floating wreckage to cling to. The submarine circled round them, and picked up the third officer as prisoner, but made no effort to assist the others. One man who actually reached the submarine was kicked off and drowned. A dozen survivors succeeded in keeping themselves afloat till they were rescued six hours later, but sixty‑four lives were lost, including the master.

In the north, the Third Army had endured an equally bloody day . . . . . the havoc that befell the 59th Division caused chaos in the north. The 59ths two forward brigades were destroyed by midday and a counter-attack by the third brigade was delivered with more courage than skill. . . . . As a significant force the 59th Division no longer existed.

Additional Information
Glasgow RoH Nelson, Graham, Lieutenant, RFC, 15 Derby Crescent.
Graham Nelson was born in Glasgow, the eldest son of Colonel William and Mrs Mary Nelson. He was educated at Glasgow Academy and began studying for a law degree, a BL, at the University of Glasgow in 1912. He enrolled for classes in Civil Law, and Constitutional Law and History. He did not sit the exams in these subjects at the end of the academic year, however. When the war broke out he was serving an apprenticeship with the law firm Kidstone, Watson, Turnbull & Co. He planned to join his father's firm, J H Taylor, Nelson, Walker & Co in due course. William Nelson, Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), TD, was a well-known Glasgow lawyer.
The war ended many career plans, however, and on 4th August 1914 he joined the Fifth Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. It was no surprise that he was one of the first to volunteer. He had been an enthusiastic member of the OTC both at school and University. He served In France from November 1914 until June 1916 when he was transferred to the Royal Flying Corps.
Qualified as an observer, he saw active service in France until December 1916, when he was sent back to Britain to train as a pilot. He qualified with such distinction in March 1917 that he was retained as an instructor. A few months later, on the evening of 30th August he was tragically killed in an aeroplane accident. He was twenty-three. Lieutenant Nelson is buried at Cathcart Cemetery, Glasgow (see www.findagrave.com). A younger brother, Robert, born too late to serve in the Great War, was killed in action in the Second World War on active service with the 7th Battalion Parachute Regiment. Glasgow RoH Robertson, TB McGregor, Lieutenant Commander, Submarine E36, 26 Buckingham Terrace.
E36 was built by John Brown, Clydebank and was launched on the 16th September 1916. E36 and E43 left Harwich at 0730 on 19th January 1917 for two patrol areas off Terschelling. A strong north easterly was blowing. At 1126 just before they left the coast, E43 signalled to E36 to proceed independently. At 1330 E36 was on the port beam but was out of sight by 1500. The sea was running fairly high and at 1850 E43, having lost her bridge screen, eased to 5 knots and turned 16 points to fit a new one. This delay must have enabled E36 to overtake her, for at 1950 off the Haaks LV, E43 had just altered course to true north when she suddenly sighted a submarine 3 points on the port bow apparently steering east and only 50 yards off. The helm was put hard to starboard and engines full astern but E43 struck E36 aft from the stern, rode right over her and saw her vanish on the starboard quarter in the darkness. E43 went astern but nothing could be seen in the darkness and heavy sea. Nothing more was heard of E36.
