It's a bit on the run down side but this is the Waterloo Memorial in St Leonard's Street.

Graeme,
Nice to see you here.
Any idea of the history of this memorial?
What is the purpose of the holes and wooden hinged door do you think? _________________

Hi Derek, it's good to be here. Hopefully with the oncoming summer I will get out and about with the camera again.
As far as I know it used to be a water well. I understand that this was not it's original location but during a re-development phase of the area it was moved there. I think it used to be further down closer to the old Deaconess Hospital.
It's a shame to see it in such a state though.

Thanks for posting an Edinburgh memorial I didn't know about. I'm pretty sure you are right about it being a well. I know someone who used to live nearby and he said it was an old well. I didn't know about the Waterloo connection though.
It's in a pretty shocking state. I'm guessing the developer who put it there has no more interest in it's upkeep.

Nothing else on this memorial since it was posted 8 years ago. With the 200th anniversary of Waterloo coming up next month, does anyone have any further info about this memorial?
