Served in both World Wars eventually becoming General Officer Commanding British troops in Palestine and Trans-Jordan.
The stained glass window commemorates Major General McConnel and his wife, Ruth Garnet Botfield. It was installed in 1993 by their daughter, Diana, Duchess of Wellington. It was designed by her daughter-in-law, the Marchioness of Douro. It depicts the Tree of Life and includes the red rose of martyrdom, local scenes. It was inspired by Ruthwell Cross in Dumfriesshire and an early English poem "Dream of Rood".
