Congratulations on a wonderful and worthwhile site - I hope to contribute when I can.
I'd also like to thank jamiemcginlay for posting the photo of the Chapel of Garioch War Memorial. While looking at all of the photos on the site, I came across his one and found my great uncles Ewen and William McRae of Kirkton, Rayne...killed in action within 2 weeks of each other in April 1917. Although they are remembered on the family gravestone, I hadn't been able to locate the memorial which would have their names on it until today. Thank you so much.

Its a pleasure Elaine, I'm delighted to hear the photographs were of help. You should post what information you have on your great uncles, I'm sure it would add to the interest of the memorial for others.

Hi Elaine
Something does not add up here.
Chapel of Garioch is some distance from Kirkton of Rayne. It is in the parish of Rayne which has its own memorial. Will check details on Rayne next week.
William at Chapel of Garioch is, I suspect, the son of a Pitcaple family which is in the parish of Chapel of Garioch. He died in 1918.
I found a Ewen who served in the Black Watch as John Campbell. Is he your relative? _________________ Jim

Hi kinnethmont,
Apologies for not replying sooner...I haven't looked back here for a while. Geography has never been my strongest subject and the family moved about a bit, looks like I made an assumption too quickly as I so wanted it to be them.
Thank you for offering to check Rayne for me, much appreciated. The family were in Newhills in 1904 but in Rayne by 1908.
William Turner McRae was born in Culsalmond in 1897 to Farquhar and Isabella McRae. The Clan MacRae Roll of Honour has his home address as Wartle.
Ewen McRae was born in Coull in 1890. He died in Mesopotamia on 21st April 1917. I'm not positive that he served under the alias John Campbell that you mention but the evidence points towards it, the SDGW has him (John Campbell) enlisting in London and birthplace Aberdeen and the Clan MacRae has no mention of him as Ewen. One day, I hope to be able to look up his service records (if they survived)

There are no McRaes ( of any spelling variation) on the Memorials at Rayne or Culsalmond. _________________ Jim
