This is mentioned merely as a matter of interest.
In November 2015 Sutton Grammar School in South London erected a new Memorial Cairn in memory of their 99 Old Boys who fell in WW2.
It is on the school playing fields, which are just across the County Border in Surrey.
To install this structure there were a number of school field trips to collect stones from the peaks of 114 mountains across the United Kingdom (I know 114 is more than 99).
On the names plaques on the completed memorial, the origin of each stone is noted against a name, with the height of that mountain, so a really unusual structure.
Five of the stones are from Scotland-
Creag Dubh
Sgorran Dubh Mor
Beinn Fhada
Beinn a Churn
Sgoran Dubh Beag
67 other stones are from Cumbria, 2 from Surrey, and the remainder from North Yorkshire, Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia and the Mourne Mountains.
This is WMR report 76371 which has 11 images, but unfortunately the IWM are having our own computer problems currently. We can raise reports but they are not copying across to the public system, an issue which started about 10 days ago, and is across the whole IWM, not just the WMR. |
