Ken,
Apologies for me only now seeing this post.
Herman Walter Von Poellnitz was a son of Caroline Elliot of Wolflee (Bonchester near Hawick), daughter of the famous naturalist Sir Walter Elliot.
Herman Walter Von Poellnitz features in the following booklet (which I have not seen).
Blandford to Baghdad - The Story of No.72 Squadron's First Commanding Officer, by Guy Warner
Booklet published privately by the author, 22 pages. A5 size booklet (N5647)
This short booklet provides a brief account of Herman Walter Von Poellnitz, the unlikely sounding name of the man who became the first commanding officer of RFC 72 Squadron, which was itself formed in 1917 (during the First World War), and which saw service at Basra (Middle East) in the Mesopotamia Campaign. Most of the short booklet recounts Von Poellnitz's wartime experiences, and is illustrated with several small photographs. _________________

He was a contemporary and friend of James McCudden VC, DSO & Bar, MC & Bar, MM.
'Von Pip' as he was known, died of a fractured skull sustained in a motor car accident at Basra as he returned early morning from a poker game in Baghdad. _________________
