From The Scotsman, Thursday 24 January 1935.
WAR MEMORIAL
Newhaven Tablet Unveiled
TRIBUTE BY MR BROWN, M.P.
A notable event in the Newhaven fishing community was the unveiling of a war memorial tablet on the frontage of a new tenement in the main street. There are 78 names on the tablet, which is inscribed "in memory of the men of the Newhaven churches who fell in the Great War." The memorial is of polished granite. It has been provided by Mr John Pottinger, builder.
Mr Ernest Brown, M.P., Parliamentary Secretary to the Mines Department, performed the unveiling ceremony. He was accompanied by Mrs Brown, and amongst others who attended were members and officials of Edinburgh Town Council. In a brief religious service, the Rev. A. Ian Burnett and the Rev. Duncan H. Neilson officiated.
Mr Brown, in unveiling the tablet, said it was a lovely thing to have memorials to our men in the churches where men, women and children had their holiest thoughts, but there was much to be said for this idea of a memorial in the street where the men had spent their childhood. They had come to pay a simple tribute to men who gave their lives for the land they loved and for the causes for which it stood. To-day they thought of men in the navy blue. Most of the men had been in the small ships doing difficult and dirty jobs on the high seas and in the narrows, mine-sweeping, a dirty job at any time, but especially so in the cold winter nights. They thought also of the men in the khaki uniforms, and remembered the great courage and endurance they all displayed. For Newhaven folk this spot was beloved for all. (Applause.)
Mr Walter Rutherford, preces of the Free Fishermen's Society, expressed the thanks of the community to Mr Pottinger and Mrs W. Rutherford propsed a vote of thanks to Mr Brown.
