The memorial was originally in the Arrol Johnston Factory at OS Map Ref: NX 989 791. It is now in storage in Dumfries Museum at OS Map Ref: NX 969 760.
At the foot of the memorial is printed March 1915.
This is another memorial that has only come to light thanks to the efforts of Joanne Turner at Dumfries Museum. She also kindly provided the following notes.
"DUMFM:1992.38.1
Arrol Johnston Ltd, Contractors to HM Government, Dumfries, Roll of Honour.
The certificate lists the names of the employees who served with the British forces during the Great European
War 1914=1915. The certificate is in a large wooden frame. "
Arrol Johnston was originally a car manufacturer but I am afraid that this memorial raises more questions than it answers.
1. Why 1914 - 1915?
2. Were there further rolls for other years?
3. If so, do any survive?
4. Which of the soldiers died?
I have other photos I can post (close-ups) if anyone has problems reading the names.
