The memorial lies in a CWGC maintained cemtery, signposted as Kilchoman Military Cemetery, on the machar (Gaelic name for grass covered sand dunes) close to the old, disused Kilchoman church and public cemetery. The machair lies above Machir Bay in which the Otranto troopshp was wrecked with the loss of alost 400 lives in 1918.
Dedication inscription on three faces
THIS CROSS OF SACRIFICE IS ONE IN DESIGN
AND INTENTION WITH THOSE WHICH HAVE
BEEN SET UP IN FRANCE AND BELGIUM AND
OTHER PLACES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD
WHERE OUR DEAD OF THE
GREAT WAR ARE LAID TO REST
Inscription below, on 4 faces
THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE
No names are given on the memorial.
I also photographed the CWGC gravestones many of which are of unidentified soldiers or sailors. PM me if you are interested in the gravestones.
