|
|
Memorial gates at the former entrance to the North British Rayon factory in Jedburgh.
OS Map Ref: NT650203, stands opposite side of the road to the Jedburgh War memorial and Abbey.
UKNIWM Ref: not listed
This is a new memorial to me and it looks brand new.
I have been past this spot many times but never remember seeing this memorial.
The North British Rayon factory was constructed in 1929 and closed in 1956, putting 70% of Jedburgh's working population out of work.
That is why, for such a small community, the plaque carries so many names.

This memorial originally comprised a pair of wrot iron gates hung on stone pillars with the North British Rayon Company logo on each gate. The original bronze plaque and the gates disappeared when the site was cleared for a new internal by-pass in the 60's.
Despite the brave words of the Chairman, within ten years the factory was closed, and within another ten nothing at all remained except the two gate pillars
The original bronze plaque.
