The memorial was originally in Tynron church at OS Map Ref NX 806 929 and is now in the nearby village hall (same map ref). A very individual memorial with the village name and the badges of the regiments.
A difficult one to track down and a tale to tell...............
The church closed for worship sometime in the 1990s I believe. Some ne'er-do-well talked the keyholder into letting him have a key and promptly made off with some of the fittings (including the memorial) and caused damage to a lot more. The daughter of a local was living in Glasgow and saw the memorial in a saleroom, recognised the name Tynron, phoned home to check, was told it had been stolen and called the police. This resulted in the recovery of some pews and the memorial. The memorial was subsequently placed in the village hall. This all happened about 8 to 10 years ago. The names are exactly the same as on the Tynron civic memorial.
As for the church, it is still unused and locked up. It must be difficult to find a use for it as the only access is up a steep flight of steps and it is surrounded by the graveyard. I am still trying to gain access to the church to photograph the marvellous stained glass windows (not known if any of them are war memorials).
The church where the memorial was originally.................
The hall where it now resides....................
and the memorial itself.......................

A very interesting story regarding the recovery of the memorial. I noticed that an item once belonging to Lt. MacRae sold on eBay just last week. _________________ www.sonsofgalloway.org.uk

A nice frame to this memorial incorporating the three badges of the regiments the men served in: King's Own Scottish Borderers, Scottish Rifles and Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
