This plaque can be found in Whitekirk Church, Whitekirk East Lothain.
To the beloved memory of David Baird (3rd Baronet of Newbyth) born 1832. He succeeded to the Baronetcy and Estates of Newbyth and Gilmerton 1852. Early in life he gave himself to the Service of his Country, taking part with his Regiment (The 74th Higland Light Infantry) in the Kaffir War 1851, The Crimea 1854 and on the Staff of Sir Colin Campbell (Lord Clyde) in the Indian Mutiny 1857, where he greatly distinguished himself. Retriring from the Army he devoted himself to the wellbeing of his home estates, earning the affection of all with whom he came into contact. he married The Honerable Ellen Stuart (2nd daughter of 12th Lord Blantyre). he passed away at Newbyth 13th Oct 1913 and was laid to rest in Whitekirk Cemetery.
Also in loving memory of John Kennedy Erskine Baird KCB born 1833. Became Admiral in the Royal Navy and ADC to HM Queen Victoria. Served in the Crimea, was C in C Pacific and Channel Squadrons. he had the respect and affection of all who knew him, being the embodiment of all that is manly and honourable. He married 1905 Constance Barbara Clarke. he died at Wootton (Isle of Wight) where he was buried 8th Dec 1908. |
