Not listed on UKNIWM
Location: on bank of River Clyde, Glasgow at the site of the former Beardmore and Company's yard where the ship was built.
Information from an article in the Sunday Times of 2 Oct 2011:
The sinking of the liner Lancastria on 17th June 1940 is Britain's worst maritime disaster. The sinking in France's Bay of Biscay on 17th June 1940 is thought to have killed 4,000 but some put the figure as high as 9.000. The ship was attacked by a German bomber and sank within 20 minutes.
It is also described as the worst single loss of life for British forces during WW2. News coverage of the tragedy was banned at the time.
On Saturday 1st October, a bronze sculpture was unveiled, it is set on a granite block with a commemorative text. It was created by Fife artist Marion Smith and represents the early sheet-steel construction of the ship. |

I heard from a retired Black Watch Major that he was at the Unveiling ceremony on Saturday in heavy rain and the Unveiling was done by the First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond .

Just one of the casualties -
Robert Kevan. – age 26 – Corporal (545496) 98 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
Born 1914 in Port William, Mochrum, Wigtownshire.
Son of Janet M. Kevan and step-son of Robert A. Dalziel of Whithorn, Wigtownshire.
Killed by enemy action on 17 June 1940.
Commonwealth War Grave – Pornic War Cemetery, France.
For the first nine months of the war, No. 98 served as a reserve squadron and during the period April/June 1940, was based in France flying Fairey Battle light bombers. Its homecoming was a tragic one for on 17 June 1940 the RMS Lancastrian, which was carrying most of No. 98's personnel, was bombed and sunk. Seventy-five airmen of the squadron were officially reported lost and fifteen others are believed to have perished. _________________ Ken |
