When the new campus was built the old memorial from Dalkeith High went missing, a new one has been made to replace it.

ALEXANDER PEGGIE – Private (265633) 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) Age 20.
Alexander was born in 1897 in Fairfield, Lassodie, Beath, Fife. Son of Robert and Jane or Jeannie (Masterton) Peggie of 38 The Square, Newtongrange, Midlothian. He joined the Home Office in October 1913 as a Temporary Boy Clerk and in December 1914 became an Assistant Clerk. He enlisted in April 1915 and went overseas in early 1916, serving in Egypt and Salonica before returning to Egypt and then Palestine.
Alexander was wounded at the battle for Beersheba but, while waiting for evacuation, was killed by an enemy shell on 21 November 1917. He is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery in Israel and is named on the Newtongrange War Memorial.

The first and last names were brothers.
Former Staff
Lieut. Robert Weir, Royal Scots
Weir Sergt. John, Black Watch
They are both named on the Channelkirk Parish War Memorial in Oxton in Berwickshire as:
ROBERT WEIR, LIEUT. R.S.
Robert Weir – age 29 – Lieutenant, 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert had been the a teacher at Carmuirs in Falkirk and at Dalkeith High School before becoming headmaster at Channelkirk in October 1912. He gained a commission at the outbreak of war, landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914 and was promoted in June 1915.
Born 1886 at Gilnockie Schoolhouse in Canonbie Dumfriesshire.
Son of William and Jane Shiel (McLean) Weir of Roselea, Oxton, Channelkirk.
Killed in Action on 16 November 1916 and buried in Beaumont-Hamel British Cemetery, France.
Also named on an individual memorial in Channelkirk School.
JOHN S. WEIR, SERGT. R.H.
John Stark Weir – age 19 – Sergeant (4225) 1/7th (Fife) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
John was educated at Dalkeith High School in Midlothian and enlisted in Lochgelly, Fife.
Born 1897 in Heriot, Midlothian.
Son of William and Jane Shiel (McLean) Weir of Roselea, Oxton, Channelkirk.
Killed in Action on 21 July 1916 and buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, France.
Their father William was headteacher at Gilnockie School and was for many years the headteacher at Heriot School. He retired to Oxton in 1912 and died there in December 1917. _________________ Ken |
