The Polar Bear Association Memorial was the first monument and sculpture to be place in the Arboretum in June 1998.
The bear sculpture is made from yellow hardwood and is 9ft long and 5ft high. Inside the bear is a time capsule containing the names of all the members of the 49th Division who did not come home.
In the base are carvings of the badges of the Regiments of the Division, together with panels containing poems written by schoolgirl Jodie Johnson when she was nine and eleven years old.
