The Memorial is housed within Partick St. Mary's Masonic Lodge No 117, 92 Dumbarton Road, Glasgow G11 6NX.
Many thanks to Ian Leighton, Lodge Member, who allowed me access to the Lodge.

And sadly this memorial is in a masonic hall and not a Glasgow school where it should be.

I agree it ought to be in a school but perhaps its current location is more accessible to the public than a school(?)
An email to one of the local councillors might produce a solution. |

If the memorial had not been rescued by Ian Leighton then it would almost certainly have ended up in a skip.
From the conversation I had with Ian it would appear that the members of the Masonic Lodge were the only people willing to give it a home.

Given the inscription at the top of this memorial (and it's history of rescue) I wonder if there was another Roll for the latter years of the war??
I'm just grateful that this fine object was given a home - why is it that school memorials seem to be more likely to be "dumped" or is that just me????
Can anyone identify the flags/banners. The Royal Standard, the French Republic and the Japanese I know, but is the Lion Rampant Belgian?? _________________ Ken |

I didn't mean to sound disparaging of the efforts made to rescue it. At least it is on display and in the community so grateful thanks to Ian Leighton for his work. It's just a shame a school memorial can't be hanging in a local school. It's a very poor attitude of the local authority if no local organisation was prepared to take it on.
It was common for rolls of honour to be produced in the early war years. They were then often superceded by another roll or memorial at the end of the war.
Ken - for the coats of arms I'd suggest, from left to right:
Japan, Serbia, Portugal, UK, France, Montenegro, Belgium and Russia

Re Local Authority taking control of memorials/ Rolls of Honour.
The new Hillhead Primary, opened a few years ago, replaced Hillhead (the old one), Dowanhill, Willowbank, and Kelvinhaugh Primary Schools.
Does anyone know if any of these schools had memorials and if so what became of them? |
