Stirling was chosen by the Scottish Government to host commemorations marking the anniversary of the 52nd (Lowland) Infantry Division arriving in Gallipoli after training in Stirling. A series of events is planned to take place 4th - 6th June, including a talk on June 6th by Dr Jim Smyth on "War Memorials of the First World War in Stirlingshire". This will take place at the Pathfoot Building on the University campus. |

Sandra - thanks for posting this and forgive me cause I'm going to have a rant!
Why Stirling????
The 52nd had battalions from Ayrshire, the Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, Lanarkshire (including Glasgow), the Lothians (including Edinburgh and, infamously, Leith) but not from Stirlingshire.
The talk about war memorials in the county will be struggling to make a link to Gallipoli - mind you I notice another speaker will be discussing "Dundee's Own and the Battle of Loos" - er, what?????
There will be contributions from "represented nations" : Turkey, Germany, Austria (whit?) Australia, New Zealand, France, India, Canada (whit?) Scotland - er, aren't there a few missing? like England and Ireland????
I think I'll be giving this a miss. _________________ Ken |

Rant forgiven, Ken!!
Far be it from me to defend the Scottish (or any!!) Government but
I think the S G was trying to avoid the accusation of being "Edinburgh-centric" and so spreading the commemorations around the country.
Stirling was chosen for the focus of Gallipoli as the 52nd trained there.
Leith and Gretna will mark the centenary of Quintinshill in May; in September, Dundee is the focus for remembering the start of the Battle of Loos; a beacon on Dundee Law is lit every year to remember the fallen from "Dundee's Own". (I live in Stirling now but Eh'm fae Dundee!!)
I understand other communities around the country will be remembering significant dates in 1916-1918.

Ken
Glad to see another person who likes a rant about this. It was originally going to be 25th April to co-incide with ANZAC day but that makes no sense if you then commemorate Gretna a month later when troops were on the way to Gallipoli. 12th July would have been my preference when Hawick and Inverclyde commemorate Gallipoli annually.
June is a compromise date and has - in my opinion - more to do with politicians' summer holiday dates than commemorating our war dead.
Why Stirling? They asked for it and got it when they were handing out centenary commemoration events. Dundee got Loos and Orkney got Jutland. Arras still to be confirmed.
