Congratulations on a very useful looking and well laid out site. I don't suppose I shall be a very frequent poster here but I applaud your initiative.
I am British, based in Bangalore, southern India and to date have mainly concentrated my research on Chailey in Sussex; research that has lasted 25 years on and off (mostly off) and which has resulted in the website below.
Surprisingly enough, it was only when I moved to India in 2003 that I found more time to devote to a parish that had been 70 miles away when I was living in Essex but which is now 5000 miles distant, give or take. _________________ Remembering the men and women of Chailey, Sussex, England

Can I ask how well British Army deaths are recorded in India?
I have a relative who died in 1900 while serving in what was India at the time but I think is now Pakistan. Would there be a marked grave? Or will there be no evidence of him whatsoever now? |

The short answer is, I'm not sure. Graves formerly under the control of the CWGC are well recorded of course and the Commission made efforts to commemorate men buried in remote outposts on centralised memorials such as Kirkee. As far as pre 1914 burials are concerned, the regiments concerned may have records, as may the records office in Calcutta (formerly the administartive centre of the British East India Company and later HM Government). How well the graves are maintained however is an entirely different matter. I think, at best, the system is haphazard and largely dependent on those charged with maintaining the cemeteries. In my limited experience, the cemeteries I've visited have been decaying and largely neglected.
Some churches in India still have old records (usually in a poor condition) and if you haven't already been in touch with Khyber Pass of the GWF, you probably should do. He may have more detailed knowledge of the grave / cemetery you're interested in in Pakistan. Here's a link to a relevant post: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=60708&hl=
