This Memorial is just up the hill from the '45 Memorial. Unusually, the only inscription is on the rear of the Memorial:
_________________ Remembering my ggf, Pte Thomas Roberts, 10 SR, killed 25 Sep 15 at Loos.
Also remembering Flt Lt Al Squires and CXX/3 killed 2 Sep 06 in Afghanistan. |

Why would the names be visible only on the reverse?
I can only surmise it may be due to weathering? Very strange. _________________

I've got a better idea. They either put up the base the wrong way around and didn't bother to change it or the statue faces the opposite way than originally intended.

It's not that the names are not visible from the front of the statue - they are just not there. I think that Paul is nearer the mark. It is not as if the rear is easier to get to (unless the Memorial has been moved).

Or it has been moved and when rebuilt it was put round the wrong way. I've seen that before.

Sounds reasonable, however there is no mention on UKNIWM of the memorial ever having moved. A press photo of the unveiling might show how it was then.

From the UKNIWM website, the details given wrongly state that there are 6 men commemorated when in fact there are 7 names listed.
Physical Description
KILTED SOLDIER IN STEEL HELMET WITH HEAD BOWED AND REVERSED ARMS, ON STONE PLINTH
Wars Commemorated & People Remembered
War FIRST WORLD WAR
Total names on memorial: 6
Served & Returned 0
Died 6
Is this an exact count? Yes, an exact count _________________

Having visited the memorial I can't understand the reasoning behind the names facing away from the road although at one time a very small path came up behind it.
There are no makers marks on the statue but the wooden rifle is similar to that seen at Fort William. _________________
