Previously posted on Scottish War Graves Project, but now moved here.
Capt Samson survived the war and therefore this is not a War Memorial in the strictest sense but is a Memorial with a Military Inscription.
Not listed on UKNIWM
Location, inside St Bride's church at OS Map Ref NS 781 101.
One of the larger individual memorials, this consists of the chancel of the church built in thanks for Capt Samson's safe return from the war. In order to build what is effectively and extension to the church, the quarry that supplied the original stone for the church was opened so that an exact match could be made of the material.
There is also a photo of Capt Samson in the vestry.
Captain Hamish Weir Samson MC served with the Scottish Rifles (info from a Roll of Honour). 3 May 1917 is mentioned on the memorial and this was the date of the battle of Arras
I have not been able to find the citation for his MC.
One final thing about this church (a bit of a cheek posting it here).....it has a memorial to the 'Admirable Crichton'.
The excellent stained glass window visible in the photo is not part of the memorial but is dedicated to the congregation - 1930.

This is now WMR, ex UKNIWM, memorial 72180.
It clearly qualifies as a war memorial |
