Joined this forum in January '08, and went on to photograph the war memorials in the Isles of Lewis and Harris. If it had not been for the sacrifice made by those listed on those memorials, Europe would have been sighing under the Nazi jackboot for longer than until May 1945.
The First World War memorials are even more poignant, as the Great War was a politically motivated conflict, executed with no regard for those ordered into battle. I take an interest in it, as the '14-'18 conflict had a profound influence on the course of history in the Isle of Lewis, where I currently reside. |

The death toll in Lewis, as elswhere in Scotland, was bad enough but after the war was ended 205 local men were lost in the Iolaire Disaster. The vessel ran aground on the Beasts of Holm on 1st January 1919 within sight of Stornoway. Many of these men had suffered the duration of the war. _________________ Jim

Quite unbelievable that the ship was so close to home and I for one thank this forum for bringing the story of it to prominance. _________________
