I have been asked the following, "about “getting the light” for War Memorial Photography :
Were they, by any chance, situated to look their sunny best for “the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month” … ? "
Does anyone know?
I think some thought went into the site selection, some instances being better than others, but I don't think photography was a factor considered. |

I would agree that photography wouldn't come in to the equation. (Good light of any description couldn't be guaranteed in November.)
I don't think the actual direction the front of the memorial faced could have been an issue - I know from photographing quite a few, that there's no particular direction any of them face as I've had to make notes to go back at all different times of the day to try and capture the best images depending on the direction of the sun. (Mind you, I don't go around with a compass so I don't know which way any of them face!)
As for positioning - a prominent location for each - but I don't know if 'in those days' the local council had the same planning issues as there are now.

I think one of the most important factors would be finding a position where you could assemble a crowd in front of it for a remembrance service.
