I haven't been along that way recently so I don't know.
Maybe if Willie is still visiting the site, he'll let us know . . . . ?

I'm brand-spanking new to this forum and today you've absolutely made my day!!!
I've been searching for my great uncle, Charles John Williams, for AGES. I have a few items (ribbons from medals, an Acton plaque, and pictures) but nothing with reference to regiment/battalion, etc. Now at least I have a direction - 1st Blackwatch.
I'll float around on cloud nine for a bit and then worry about where to go next
Thank you for taking the time to photograph the Bridge of Allan War Monument and for bringing me one step closer...

Silly me, I don't know why I typed 1st when it clearly says 2nd on the War Memorial! That's what I get for doing all this detective work when I should be in my bed! It's just so difficult to stop when you're on a roll!
As for the "J" - John - I have know this from his birth certificate. He was named Charles after his father and John was his grandfather. Charles Sr. was "adopted" by John as he was born illegitimate. Such a web
Thank you again for posting all of this wonderful information! I'm sure Uncle Charlie is happy to know he's been "found"!

It may be that he was a former regular soldier with the 1st Black Watch since his regt. number looks like it was issued around 1902. So, he could have still been on the Reserve List on the outbreak of war and after a bit of training was sent out as a reinforcement for the 2nd Battalion.
Perhaps Kelly will know if he had any previous army experience.
Cheers,

Hello Stuart,
I'm a total novice to all things military and wonder how Charlie's regiment number = 1902 issue.
I don't have any more info regarding CJW's previous army experience. Where would I find the information? I believe a great deal of the records were destroyed during WWII. Sad, as I know my Grandfather George (Charlie's brother) also served with the Black Watch before coming to Canada. Thankfully, I was able to obtain George's Canadian Attestation papers through our National Archives.

Fantastic news Willie!
Thanks for letting us know. I'll try my best to get there - I can't wait to see the 'after' having seen the 'before' and the 'before that'.
Kelly
Great pictures!
My knowledge of uniforms is minimal but I believe their sporrans were identifiable by 5 tassels.

Now that the taxes are done...
Thanks, Anne! I figured CJW was wearing his Black Watch uniform...I'm going to check out the Black Watch site.
Keptie, thank you for the info regarding the BW forum. I didn't realize it was there. Hopefully, I'll be able to find out more about my Grandfather and Great Uncle's involvement with the BW.
Willie & Anne, I am absolutely GREEN with envy. I would LOVE to be there for the rededication of the Bridge of Allan War Memorial. If you or anyone you know is going to videotape it I would be thrilled to purchase a copy!
Have a great day! It's beautiful here in Colborne, Ontario, Canada!

Have received a communication from Major (rtd) R C B Ritchie , Black Watch saying that he and a number of Argylls and Black Watch attended the Re Dedication Ceremony at Bridge of Allan War Memorial on Saturday 9 May 2009 .
It lists a number of Black Watch and Argylls as its the boundary area of the two Regiments being Perth & kinross and Stirlingshire ..
