|
|
For those who may be unaware that there is a cd available with information of those soldiers and Officers who died during the great war from 1914-1919 although 1919 entries are few and far between. The info given is name, rank, number, where they were born, enlisted and lived. If anyone wants a look up for a soldier then please post below.

Hello Kevin
Many thanks for the offer of a look up, I am interested in finding out about Alexander Smith S/N S/43462 (9th Bn B W) my great uncle. I know he enlisted in Perth but where was he living/working at the time.
His grave: 11.D.5. Guemappe BC Wancourt
Regards

Not a great deal to add to what you already know.
He war born in Dundee
Enlist in Perth but there is no information as to his residence.
He was killed in Action in F& F (France & Flanders) 26/04/1917.
He was 1 of 24 men who died on that date from the 9th B.W. (Please do not take this number as gospel as SDGW is not 100% accurate)
Sorry I can't add any more meat to the bone

Hi Kevin,
Can you tell me if there's anything on a Lance Corporal Robert Moug of the 4/5 Black Watch?
He's not on CWGC or SNWM. Someone did a Ancestry look up for me and found nothing. He's on the Kinnettles War Memorial and the parish churches stain glass window.
Cheers,
Derek. |

Derek
An unusual surname.
The only man with that name ( 1914 -1923 ) died 1919 at Montrose age 71. If not him, the remaing possibility, if not missing altogether, is he died in England or Ireland.
Will check further later. _________________ Jim

I suspect that Moug might be this man
Name: MUGG, ROBERT
Initials: R
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Unit Text: 5th Bn.
Age: 22
Date of Death: 23/10/1916
Service No: 3318
Additional information: Son of Mrs. Margaret Mugg, of Totterie, St. Cyrus, Montrose.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 10 A.
Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL
and from SNWM
Surname MUGG
Firstname Robert
Service Number 3318
Date Death 23/10/1916
Decoration
Place of birth Forfar
Other 5th Bn.
SNWM roll THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLANDERS)
Rank Pte
Theatre of death F.& F.
So Forfar/Kinnettles - right nearby I think?
And from 5th Bn Black Watch Roll of Honour it seems to be the best fit surname. http://www.royalhighlanders.co.uk/roll.htm

Thanks lads,
I'd considered Robert Mugg, but would it be likely CWGC would have his rank wrong as well as his surname? He is the closest fit though.
I'd looked up scotlands people and found there were 3 Robert Moug's born in the whole country between 1870 & 1902, plus Robert Mugg. All within the Montrose area. |

Derek,
Did you get access to take photos of the church windows, now a private house ? |

Not sure that 2 different spellings mean that one has to be wrong. I have seen different spellings on the same gravestone and a process of gentrification changes unpalatable names like Smellie to Smiley so why not Mugg to Moug? I think in WW1 LCpl and LSgt were more appointments than ranks so that seems OK. Local ranks would not be in official records and I have seen a few people whose rank on CWGC is lower than the memorial (but rarely, if ever, the other way round).

CWGC will record him according to the details supplied them by the military authority, in this case the name used was Mugg and will be the information given by the man on enlisting.
Whatever spelling he chose to use became his " military name ".
His MIC has Mugg as would his death certificate, since Mugg was the spelling reported.
He may have been an acting L/Cpl which will make him still a Pte, again details furnished by the Army. _________________ Jim
