Near this pillar are deposited the remains of HENRY ADDISON Esqr.
Late Captain in His Majety's 56th Regiment
After having serv'd with credit
In the memorable Defence of Gibraltar
He died in this City of a putrid fever
January 8th 1788 aged 25 years.

The 56th Foot had been in Gibraltar for nine years before the Great Siege began. Between 1779 and 1783 is was part of the garrison which held off all attacks from Spain and France.
In October 1783 it moved back to England and in Spring 1784 to Scotland. At the time of Captain Addison's death they were in Glasgow so that is why he's commemorated here.
