Corinne
I have edited the title of this post as this memorial is in Woodhaven. I can’t find Peacehaven on any map, is it Woodhaven you mean? Since it is a ship rather than a community memorial I am also moving it from Civic to Regiments & Units section in Fife.
Regards
Adam |

Adam
There is a Peacehaven just along the road from Brighton, East Sussex. A long way from Scotland and was only created after the First World War hence its name.
I have no idea whether there is any connection with this Peacehaven and Scotland.
Tony

THE "MARS" TRAINING SHIP
The "Mars" was built in 1840 and was engaged in the Crimean War and afterwards on the Mediteranean Station. Originaly designed for 81 guns, the ship was reduced to 61 guns when heavier ordnace was introduced.
A fine specimen of the older type of British battleship, the "Mars" was moored in the Tay on the 17th of August, 1869, for the purpose of being used as a training-ship for boys without suitable homes, or beyond the control of parents. It was licensed for 400 boys and the education was thoroughly practical. Besides seamanship, instruction was given in metal-work, wood-work, shoemaking, tailoring and sail-making. During the year the ships brig, the "Francis Molison", used to cruise round the coast with a compliment of 70 or 80 boys until it was sold in 1919.
Over 6000 boys were trained on the "Mars" during its time in the Tay. |

According to Gordon Douglas` book "We`ll send ye tae the Mars" the memorial was unveiled on 21 April 1921 by Principal J Yule Mackay of University College.
The 1919 Accounts book apparently lists 170 boys who died.
I will endeavour to find this list and put it on the Forum. |
