Burnside Blairbeth Parish Church, 2 Church Avenue, Burnside G73 5BX
OS Grid Ref: NS 622601
The following is an extract from a booklet “The story of the Church’s Stained Glass windows” by Robert W. Rowatt.
“The Burnside Church Avenue building of Burnside Blairbeth Church was formerly St. Gilbert’s, Pollockshields. Following a union with Sherbrooke Church to form Sherbrooke-St. Gilbert’s, the building lay empty until 1951 when it was carefully dismantled “stone by stone” and transferred from Pollockshields to its current site where it was re-built and dedicated as Burnside Parish Church.
The Burnside Church congregation not only acquired a beautiful building but also the magnificent stained glass windows which had been commissioned for the original St. Gilbert’s, Pollockshields. The church windows were designed by Oscar Paterson who was born in the Gorbals in 1863.
Although the window is a war memorial, the only military image which appears is in the middle of the centre light and depicts a First World War soldier carrying his dying comrade from the battlefield.
Considering Oscar Paterson’s attention to detail, the lack of facial features in the carried soldier must have been deliberate. Taken together with the text from John Chapter 15 Verse 13: “Greater love hath no man than this ....” we can only assume that the carried casualty represents the ‘unknown warrior’ – any victim of any conflict.
Since the original purpose of this window was as a memorial to those members of St. Gilbert’s congregation who served in the First World War, the bronze plaque commemorating the Burnside Church members who have lost their lives in conflict is sited beneath the centre light of the Memorial Window”
