Geoff's handy SNWM search engine has been down for the last day or so unfortunately.

Am I right to assume that the "New" CWGC Search Engine will be in Santa's delivery sack???? _________________ Ken |

All too easily over the Christmas period
However to answer properly, Geoff's excellent Search Engine "died" back in August. As I understood it the main reason for its demise was that the new CWGC search function was due to be launched. I just wondered if "it will all be over by Christmas" _________________ Ken |

Ken
There was no direct timing connection as far as I am aware. Certainly, the changes CWGC are making had an influence on Geoffs's decision to halt his engine.
I understand the new CWGC site, when it is launched, should make searching much better than before and well worth the wait. _________________ Jim

The CWGC have a poisoned chalice.
Publish too little and have hundreds of thousands of requests or publish too much and thereby cut off a valuable income stream. _________________

Before the growth in internet access, the CWGC charged for large searches and lists to be produced.
By putting more and more info online they've reduced their workload but also lost income.
They still sit on quite alot of interesting infomation, such as original grave records, so it will be interesting to see how much more they will allow to go free.
I'm sure there are many others who still send donations to the CWGC for complicated searches etc. _________________

My closing date of August was decided (i) by CWGC's original intention to launch their new website "in June" (but that date always seemed not likely to me, considering their specification), (ii) Expiry of my website hosting in August. As it happens I probably still have space to re-run it but since I've no idea when the new thing will happen, there seems to be no point in my continued effort. I heard a rumour that the new launch would be "towards the end of the year" and then "early next year". I don't expect anyone will know until it happens!
You could try asking them? I don't suppose I would get a reply.
cheers and all the best for 2012....

CWGC are now advising the launch of the new site this month.
" The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is proud to announce that our new website will be launched in January 2012.
The redesigned site has a completely new “look and feel” which we hope will appeal to a wide audience. We have made the site much easier to navigate and maintain, but perhaps the most improved features are the enhanced search capabilities around the “Search our Records” function.
Following your feedback, a greatly enhanced search will allow you to look for individuals by regiment, cemetery, country, awards, date of death and service number. You will also be able to browse cemeteries and memorials by country and even by size.
Further enhancements will come on line later as part of our ongoing commitment to provide a better service to you.
Finally, the Commission would like to express our sincere thanks to all those individuals who took part in our feedback programme sent in suggestions or tested the website. Thank you for your assistance. " _________________ Jim
