Hiya folks allow me to introduce myself my name is Charlie McDonald and first got interested in the Great War after a visit to the battelfields and cemeteries of the Somme in 1990. Despite the fact that my grandfather had served in the 9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Highland Light Infantry and later the 12th Battalion; my interests are the deeds and actions of the 15th (Glasgow Tramways) 16th (Glasgow Boys Brigade) & 17th (Glasgow Commercials) Battalions of the Highland Light Infantry.
Interested in all aspects of Scots history and more so the social history of Glasgow's East End and in particular the Parkhead , Bridgeton and Camlachie districts where I grew up and lived for half a century until I moved to Riddrie three years ago.
My only claim to fame is I once met Derek Robertson and his lovely wife in Mill Road Cemetery on the Somme |

Welcome aboard Glesga Keelie. I too have more than a passing interest in Glasgow's East End where my family lived for a long time.
Sounds like Derek knows how to show a lady a good time! |

Welcome Charlie. Do you have the article on Private Meek of the 17th who fell attacking Munich trench? It was in the Scotsman in an article on Avril William's B&B
If not, I have a copy.
Aye

Malcolm
I have heard of it but haven't seen it as yet and I would appreciate a copy if you don't mind sending it to me.
Yours

And my only claim to fame is that I once stumbled upon a nutter on the Somme who carried a rucksack on his back which contained a shoebox containing a card filing system on all the men of the 15th, 16th and 17th HLI he was researching.........and he diligently recorded every one of his men that he found in the cemeteries of the Somme.
How many hours and days he spent walking the cemeteries is not known but what I do know is that the book he has researched on the men in whose footsteps he followed is long overdue. _________________

Derek
The old 'Kitchener's Keelies' is still on the go. However due to work commitments and other distractions it has had to be put on the back boiler these last few years...still have all those index cards.
Hopefully it will be done in time for the 90th Anniversary of the Armistice.
Yours in the Cause

Good stuff, I had a right chuckle to myself. Seems like something out of a comedy classic .

Those were the good old days before the internet and the CWGC records being online.
For myself, I remember several trips to the library in Edinburgh and wading through all the old CWGC cemetery registers tracking down "my boys". _________________

Likewise Derek I done the same in the Glasgow Room in the Mitchell Library here in Glasgow and spent literally months reading every Commonwealth War Graves cemetery register looking for my 'Glesga Keelies'. Had to laugh at a young guy I met recently when he said 'I painstakingly spent almost three hours on the internet researching this stuff'...I remember thinking to myself 'try visiting every cemetery and Memorial from Thiepval to Niueport visiting their graves and ticking them off on your index cards and then complain about the hardship of research'...especially on foot as I don't drive. |
