Pity about the photos, but there it is.
Can I ask you another question: there is another William Wood listed among the WW2 casualties. Was he related?
Thanks for your help |

Yes, the William Wood on the Plean memorial was the brother of John Wood, my grandmothers 2nd husband. |

Sorry, never noticed that it was WW2. Possibly related. Will check it out when I get a chance. |

ok thanks! I do have a photo of the WW2 one, by the way if it's of interest to you.
Yet another question, according to his military records, John Hutchison had four sisters:Alice, Mary, Christine & Maggie - which one married John Wood and John Lough?

My grandmother was Ellison Kerr Hutcheson, later surname spelling was changed to Hutchison. She was married to John Lough and then John Wood. She was known as Alice.
As well as her brother John, she also had a brother Daniel and a brother Andrew. Sisters were as you listed. |

I am the grandson of Mrs. Lough, ms Hutchison. Having contacted family members with regard to photographs, none have been found for either John Lough or her brother John Hutchison.
My grandmother was also married to John Wood, brother of William Wood of 79 Red Row,Plean who is commemorated on the Plean memorial. She was a widow when she married my grandfather in 1921 in Cowie. I have not uncovered a death for John Wood, either on Scotlands People or the CWGC sites.
Two husbands lost during the years 1916-1921.
The John Lough on the Cowie memorial would have been the same John Lough on the Plean memorial. The Lough family would probably have requested his name be added on the Plean memorial. |
I have just found another two of the family who died in WW1. They were my gran`s cousins from Kirkintilloch and I listed their details on the Kirkintilloch page. |

I think I've found Andrew Hepburn, since a descendant informs me the family came from Tarbolton, Ayrshire to work in the pit in Plean. This would mean that of the three Andrew Hepburns on SNWM, the one I'm looking for would be Private 241108 of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, who died in 1917 in Palestine. Any ideas how to find out more?

Tanya - he would have been a Territorial soldier in the 1/5th RSF.
His medal card has :
Medal card of Hepburn, Andrew
Royal Scots Fusiliers 9254 Private
Royal Scots Fusiliers 241108 Private
So he probably served in the 155th Brigade of the 52nd Lowland Division in Gallipoli and Egypt before being killed in Palestine.

Interesting. So he would maybe have been at Gallipoli with my granddad who was there with the KOSB...
I've always meant to ask: what are the numbers opposite the different medals on the MIC?
Thanks for your help Ken,

Two men named Clusker on the memorial. Duncan was on CWGC, but couldn't nail Peter. Turns out he was discharged on medical grounds in the early days of the war, having re-enlisted - he'd served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in India and South Africa, then Defence Corps. Died in 1919 of natural causes, but linked to an illness while serving in India. It's all in the pension records which have survived. He seems to have been either father or step-father to Duncan.

The numbers opposite the medals on MICs will be a reference to the actual medal roll which grants the entitlement to the medal. I believe these can be handy if you want to look up others from the same unit awarded the medal at the same time.
