A really interesting article on the London Gazette site about the introduction and timing of the conscription process during the First World War.

That's very interesting. I'm surprised that only 26% of the men who enlisted in the British Army were conscripted. I'm even more surprised that almost as many men were exempted through medical condition or reserved occupations as served.
