BURRELTON MAN KILLED AT THE FRONT -
HOW LANCE-CORPORAL MORRISON MET HIS DEATH
Information has been received by his parents, who reside at Brodie, near Forres, from Sergeant Milton, 1st Black Watch, that Lance-Corporal John Morrison was killed in action on 25th January. Lance-Corporal Morrison, who was well-known in Burrelton district and was 29 years of age, joined the Black Watch in September, and left for the Front in November. According to information received, Lance-Corporal Morrison fell wounded in the leg about the same time as Second-Lieut. Willet, and although wounded, crawled over to this officer, and was in the act of trying to take off his pack when he received the fatal shot. He was getting on well in the regiment, and had been newly appointed a non-commissioned officer. On Sunday at the close of the service in Cargill Parish Church, of which the deceased was a member, the "Dead March" in "Saul" was played in his honour. |

He has an entry in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour which mentions a brother George James a Second Lieutenant 3/6th Seaforth Highlanders.

Ken,
Thanks for that again - quite amazing as George is commemorated on Blair Atholl War memorial, Perthshire but I had not made the connection (but probably should have now reading it);
THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 20.04.1918
DISTRICT MEN
Captain George J. Morrison, Seaforths (killed in action), for a number of years prior to the war acted as junior clerk in the Blair Castle Estate Office. His widow is a daughter of Mr and Mrs D. Fraser, Station House, Blair Atholl.
ABERDEEN EVENING EXPRESS: 04.05.1918
SEAFORTH CAPTAIN'S DEATH
Captain George Morrison, Seaforth Highlanders, who died of wounds on April 11, was the youngest son of Mr John Morrison, Brodie, Forres, and the second who has made the supreme sacrifice. Captain Morrison joined the Royal Scots in April, 1915, and received his commission in the Seaforths in January, 1916. He was engaged in the estate offices of the Duke of Atholl, and before joining the Colours was with the Duke of Sutherland, Shropshire.
PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 08.05.1918
PERTHSHIRE OFFICERS
Lieutenant George Morrison, Seaforths (killed), son of Mr Morrison, head gamekeeper, Brodie, was for some time employed in the office of Messrs Mackenzie and Grant, solicitors, Forres, and, on enlisting, was in the Atholl Estates Office. He was married, and is survived by a widow and one child, who reside at Blair Atholl. |

Reading some of the newspaper reports I noticed the following;
John followed in his father’s footsteps and also became a gamekeeper on the Ardtornish Estate at Morvern, Argyllshire. At the outbreak of war, he decided to volunteer and travelled to Perth to enlist with The Black Watch on 7 September 1914.
John is also commemorated on the WM at Lochaline.
There is no mention of his presence in Cargill Parish. I wonder if he may have been a gamekeeper on Dunsinnan Estate for a time. |
