Previously located in St Andrew’s and St Cuthbert’s Roman Catholic church in Kirkcudbright at OS Map Ref NX681509.
Although this memorial is lost and we have not found a photographic record, fortunately we have a witness to its passing. Ian Devlin (author of the two books about Kircudbright’s War Memorial) remembers seeing the memorial “on the porch floor smashed up in the 1970’s restoration of the church.”
He has kindly drawn the font from memory and I am very grateful to him for his time and effort as I think this information would otherwise be lost.
From ‘The Scotsman’ of Saturday, 16th April 1921, page 7
Kirkcudbright war memorials
The memorial erected to the memory of the soldiers and sailors belonging to Kirkcudbright town and parish was unveiled at Kirkcudbright on Thursday by Colonel R.F. Dudgeon, C.B. Lord-Lieutenant of the Stewartry.
The memorial is the work of Mr G.H. Paulin, sculptor, Glasgow, and consists of a group of bronze statuary depicting Britain defending the weak. Prior to the unveiling ceremony a united memorial service was held in St Cuthbert’s Parish Church, A memorial was also unveiled in St Cuthbert's R.C. Church being performed by the Rev. Father M'Hardy, M.C. The memorial takes the form of a Pisa marble font. The pupils of the Johnston School have also erected a scroll memorial to former pupils.
