Evening tv news for 16th May 2013 showed the unveiling of the new WW2 Memorial to
FLYING OFFICER J/13408 JOHN DONALD McDONELL, aged 21 years , ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE killed flying the Spitfire from RAF FRASERBURGH and it had engine problems over Fort William and due to low cloud crashed into MEALL an t-SUIDHE near Ben Nevis .
The memorial was instigated it would seem by Robert Cairns , chairman of the Lochaber Archaelogy Society in Fort William .

The aircraft involved was a Spitfire Mk I serial X4326. This late in the war, the Mk Is which remained were only used for training. The pilot was part of 8(C)OTU (Operational Training Unit).
The Air Safety Network makes no mention of engine problems but records loss of control in cloud which seems more likely.
