PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 02.07.1921
BLACKFORD WAR MEMORIAL
IMPRESSIVE UNVEILING CEREMONY
The unveiling ceremony of the war memorial erected at Blackford, in memory of the men from the parish who fell in the Great War, took place on Saturday afternoon in brilliant weather.
The service was opened with the singing of the 23rd Psalm, followed by the rev. G. Milne, B.D., engaging in prayer, when the unveiling ceremony was performed by Capt. H. Drummond Moray of Abercairney, who unfurled the Union Jack covering the front of the granite edifice. Mr Daniel S. Stewart, Secretary of the War Memorial Committee, then read the names of the fallen:-
1914
JOHN WILSON, WILLIAM MAILER, ROBERT MAILER
1915
JOHN M’FEAT, JOHN L. WHITE, WILLIAM HALLY, DUNCAN M’NAUGHTON
1916
WILLIAM MELLIS, WILLIAM KERR, JOHN SCOBIE, WILLIAM SINCLAIR
1917
DAVID GILMOUR, JOHN WHYTE, PATRICK DIAMOND, CHARLES M’CALLEY
1918
PATER M’PHAIL, JAMES MELLIS, JAMES EASTON, DAVID CUNNINGHAM, JOHN HOUSTON, ROBERT WHYTE, ROBERT STILL, GEORGE RENNIE, WILLIAM NAIRN, THOMAS STARKEY
1919
JOHNSTON STOCKMAN
“Their name liveth for evermore”
Mr Robert Hart sounded the ‘Last Post’ on the bugle, and the dedication prayer was engaged in by the rev. D. S. M’Lachlan, M.A., while the audience all joined in the singing of Hymn 339; after which the Rev. James M’Gibbon, D.D., of Glasgow Cathedral gave a most touching and impressive address, which rekindled old memories and touched the hearts of all. The Rev. Dr seemed quite uplifted at being asked to speak upon such a great occasion, sad as it was to many of those present. He loved Blackford, where he had fulfilled his first charge in the ministry, and, although he had been away for about twenty years from it, he was very happy at being here on this occasion, for, in looking over the list of the fallen, he remembered those amongst them whom he had baptised. His experience at the front as chaplain had been most memorable, and it was owing to his work in the Great War that he could enter so fully into sympathy with those who had lost loved ones. Life did not consist in the length of it, but in the fulfilment of duty, not to ourselves, but for the sake of others and to our God.
Miss Haldane of Cloan next spoke a few appropriate words, after which Mr James Gardiner, M.P., very feelingly and fittingly touched on the many noble men who had given their lives as a sacrifice for others.
The ceremony was most impressive throughout, and was attended by a large gathering from all parts. After the singing of the national Anthem, a large number of wreaths were placed at the foot of the monument. |

THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 29.06.1918
BLACKFORD OFFICER KILLED
Mrs Mellis, M'Millan Place, Blackford, has received official intimation that her son, Second Lieutenant James Mellis, Gordon Highlanders, was killed in action on 15th June. In a letter, his captain states that Second Lieutenant Mellis was, during an advance, shot through the head by a machine gun bullet, and killed instantaneously. Second Lieutenant Mellis enlisted in the Black Watch soon after the outbreak of war, proceeding to the front some months later. Towards the end of last year he returned to this country, and was gazetted Second Lieutenant in March last, and posted to the Gordons. He was home on overseas leave some six weeks ago, and proceeded again to the front some six weeks later. Prior to enlisting he was engaged on the office staff of Messrs Aitken & Co., brewers, Falkirk. Another brother was killed about two years ago, and his youngest brother is a prisoner of war in Germany.
THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 19.08.1916
BLACKFORD SOLDIER MISSING -
FORMERLY EMPLOYED IN CRIEFF
Information has been received from the War Office by Mrs Mellis, Blackford, that her son, William, has been posted as missing. Private Mellis, previous to joining the County Battalion, was employed with the Crieff Hydropathic Company, and at the outbreak of war immediately responded to the call. He was well-known in football circles in Crieff, being a prominent member of the Morrisionian F.C. Mrs Mellis has other two sons with the Colours in France.
THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 28.04.1917
BLACKFORD MAN KILLED IN ACTION
Official intimation was received last week by Mrs Mellis, Moray Street, that her son, Corporal William Mellis, Black Watch, reported missing on 30th July, 1916, is now presumed to have been killed on that date. Corporal Mellis was 26 years of age, and enlisted on the day war was decalred, and went with his regiment to France in May, 1915. Previous to enlisting he was employed as a painter at the Strathearn Hydropathic, Crieff. He was well-known in athletic circles, having played for several seasons with the Morrisonian F.C., Crieff., and was successful at the last highland games held in Blackford previous to the outbreak of war in securing the handsome cup presented by Colonel Sir Theodore Brinckman, Bart., C.B., shooting tenant, Carim Lodge, for the highest aggregate points in the local events. He was a young man of exceedingly bright intelligence, and took a great interest in the social activities of the time. Possessed of an extremely bright and cheery disposition, he was a general favourite with all with whom he came in contact, and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. The sympathy of the community is expressed with Mrs Mellis and the other members of the family in their sad loss. |
