A physical link with the Renfield Church is the Boy’s Brigade Memorial to former members of the Company who lost their lives in the Great War. That Company – the 5th Glasgow – still thrives in Kelvindale. It was founded in 1885 just two years after the launching of the Brigade, which makes it one of the oldest in the world.
The flags or colours were presented to the Company in 1912 by the St. Andrews Society of Glasgow.
Upon the outbreak of the Great War in August 1914, there was a rush of volunteers to the army. Former Boys’ Brigade members in Glasgow, particularly, joined the 16th Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry and these colours were used at the first parade.
