Another nephew of J.M.Barrie, also on the Dumfries Academy memorial.
Although he is not named on this memorial, perhaps he should be.
Most sources give his birthplace as Dumfries but he was born in Kirriemuir on 11 November 1881 and his parents, John Galloway and Mary Edward Barrie, married in Kirriemuir in 1879.
His birth was registered in both Kirriermuir and in Dumfries where his father was an H.M. Inspector of Schools.
John Galloway – age 34 – Private (2029) 40th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
John was educated at Dumfries Academy before moving to Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen. He studied Arts and Science at Aberdeen University 1904-06, became a journalist and for a short time he was on the staff of the “Aberdeen Free Press” before he went to London. Later he emigrated to Tasmania, where, with his brother Alexander, he became a successful fruit farmer. The brothers enlisted in May 1916 at Clairmont, Tasmania and sailed from Melbourne in September, landing at Plymouth in December. John had been ill on the voyage and was admitted to Parkhouse Camp Hospital, Andover (on Salisbury Plain) where he died of Mumps and Cardiac arrest.

Born 11/11/1881 in Kirriemuir, Forfarshire. The birth was also registered in Dumfries where his parents were domiciled at that time and where his father was H.M. Inspector of Schools.

Son of John and Mary Edward (Barrie) Galloway of 23 Crawford Road, Aberdeen and of Bidd, Port William, Wigtownshire, (Source: Service Record and CWGC)
Died on Service on 17 January 1917 and buried in Aberdeen (Springbank) Cemetery.
Also named on the City of Aberdeen Roll of Honour. _________________ Ken |
