William Wallace, Guardian of Scotland
Location: Wallace Memorial Gardens, Union Terrace
Google Maps
This is a quite stunning memorial. It is huge and I'm afraid none of my photographs do it justice.
If you follow the Google Maps link you can compare it to the traffic lights for size.

Yes the planters are in the way of the info in some of the photos but they are there to stop the locals skateboarding on the plinth.

Anne
Thanks for the update. In that case well done Aberdeen City Council. I saw the skateboarders had moved across the road to the gardens beside the railway and a right untidy lot they were.
Thanks

William Wallace
I forgot to post this image before.
This is a photograph of the cast iron railings which surrounds the gardens behind the Wallace monument. I’m assuming the claymores are a nod to the large sword Wallace was alleged to have carried so I take it the intention is that with the erection of these railings this park is also part of the memorial to Wallace? I don’t think these gardens currently have a name. Aberdeen City Council refers to them as the gardens opposite His Majesty’s Theatre.
Also, from
http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/web/files/LocalHistory/sculpture_trail_leaflet.pdf
William Grant Stevenson (1849-1919) designed this enormous bronze. Stevenson was born in Ratho, Midlothian and trained at the Royal Scottish Academy.
William Wallace probably never visited Aberdeen, although his chronicler writer 150 years later (Blind Harry) tells a fanciful tale of his exploits in the North East of Scotland. |

More information on the railings from the City Council website which confirms the Wallace connection:

Historic colours used to give Victorian railings a facelift
30/04/07
Victorian railings in the heart of Aberdeen have been given a spring facelift, restoring them to their original glory.
The railings bordering the pocket park on Rosemount Viaduct were built to a design considered to “be in keeping with the Wallace Statue” nearby and approved at a meeting of Aberdeen Town Council in October 1888.
Now the railings — featuring William Wallace’s heraldic crest bearing the Latin phrase “pro libertate patriae” (“for the freedom of country”) — have been meticulously restored for Aberdeen City Council by Bell Decorating Group Ltd.
The colours include those used on Wallace’s crest and were chosen to harmonise with HM Theatre and the recently-restored Central Library lamp standards. |

|
|
On the first Sunday of November there is a service held in the gardens.
The Earl Haig Fund Aberdeen Committee have held a small service there for many years.
The Dedication of Garden of Remembrance Service is conducted by the padre of Aberdeen Banff Kincardine Area Council, The Royal British Legion Scotland.
The garden has a pink granite memorial and near to that a large cross and small link chain fence is left so that the people who attend the service can remember the fallen. During the short service the small poppy crosses are laid as there is nowhere at the war memorial to do this.
Also in the garden are several plaques for anyone who died at work. |
